Setting Up

The first things to do after inviting bore: prefix, permissions, help, and role order.

Setting Up

This page covers the handful of settings that decide whether bore works well in your server. Everything else is optional and documented in its own section.

The prefix

bore listens for a text prefix, not for pings. The default is ,.

,prefix

Shows the prefix your server is using right now.

To set your own:

,prefix add !

To go back to the default:

,prefix remove

You need Manage Messages to change the prefix. If you set something hard to type, you cannot ask bore for it, so write it down.

You can also make short names for long commands. See Prefix and Aliases.

Permissions

bore needs to be able to do what you ask it to do: kick, ban, manage channels, manage roles, and so on. The simplest path is to invite it with Administrator and move its role to the top of your role list.

If you would rather not hand over Administrator, bore can still do everything in these docs. Give it the specific permissions for the features you use, or hand out roles through Fake Permissions so trusted staff can use bore commands without holding real Discord power.

Two things bore cannot do without help:

  • It cannot see members who joined long ago unless they have been active since the bot last started. Lists of roles, bans, or old members can look incomplete.
  • It cannot act on a member whose highest role is above its own, or above yours.

Role order

Put bore's role above every role you expect it to manage. If bore sits below your moderator role, neither you nor your moderators can ban or role anyone who holds it.

Help

,help ban

Shows the command's description, aliases, arguments, usage, and the permission it requires. For a command group, ,help pages through every subcommand.

,help

bore keeps the full, always-current command list on the website instead of dumping it into your channel: bore.breed.rip/commands.

First five minutes

A sensible order for a new server:

  1. ,prefix add <something you like> if , is not your taste.
  2. Set up AntiNuke so a hijacked account cannot finish a wipe. It is on by default, so at least point its alerts somewhere: ,antinuke logs #mod-logs.
  3. Add event logging so you can see what happened overnight.
  4. Turn on Automod with ,filter setup.
  5. Set welcome messages and auto roles if you want new members to land somewhere.

Making bore look like yours

If you want the bot to use your server's name, avatar, banner and bio instead of the defaults:

,customize name My Helper
,customize avatar <image or link>
,customize banner <image or link>
,customize bio A bot for this server.

All four need Administrator in that server. bore's avatar can only be changed twice an hour, which is a Discord limit.
